I was trained as a photographer in the Air Force in the 1950s. After my discharge in 1959, I
worked as a professional for several photography studios in Salt Lake City for several years.
A number of (uncredited) photos were published in national magazines for Goodyear Tire and
Champion Sparkplug ads featuring Mickey Thompson's and Craig Breedlove's land speed
record attempts at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the 1960s. I also shot several record album
covers for Rosalie Sorrels on the Folkways Label.
Moving to San Francisco in 1962 I found it difficult to get decent work in photography and
ended up with a 40 plus year career in business. I retired in 2004 and now have time for serious
photography once again.
I have never stopped taking photos, but without easy access to darkroom facilities, and being
unwilling to invest in the cost of creating my own, I was subject to the whims of commercial
photofinishers. Not a satisfactory arrangement.
Having discovered digital photography a several years ago when, I bought a Canon A-10, I
decided to try my hand at the field again. Especially now that my computer is my darkroom.
Canon cameras have been my preference over the years, but I have owned and used Leica,
Nikon, Miranda, Bronica, Rollie, Speed Graphic, Minolta, Yashica, Minox and several others I
have forgotten. My first serious camera was a Canon L1, purchased in Japan in 1958. I still have
that camera and use it from time to time.
Most of my recent work has been done with the Digital Rebel. I recently "upgraded" to a Canon
Rebel XTi (400D)SLR. I generally shoot RAW format and Photoshop Elements 5 is used almost
exclusively for processing and editing my images, my electronic darkroom.
